How to Convert Square Feet to Square Meters
Area · Last updated: July 2025
Square feet (ft²) and square meters (m²) measure area. Because area is two-dimensional, you square the length conversion factor: (0.3048 m/ft)² = 0.09290304 m² per ft².
The formula
Square meters = square feet × 0.092903
Square feet = square meters ÷ 0.092903 (or × 10.7639)
Do not multiply feet by 0.3048 to convert ft²—that is a frequent error.
Reference table
| From | To |
|---|---|
| 100 ft² | 9.29 m² |
| 500 ft² | 46.45 m² |
| 1,000 ft² | 92.90 m² |
| 2,000 ft² | 185.81 m² |
| 1 m² | 10.764 ft² |
Real estate and flooring
US listings advertise apartment size in ft²; European listings use m². A 900 ft² condo ≈ 83.6 m². Flooring and tile are often sold by the box covering a certain ft² or m²—convert before comparing price per area.
Land and agriculture
Acres and hectares are another layer: 1 acre ≈ 43,560 ft² ≈ 4,047 m². When only ft² and m² are involved, use the formulas above.
Common mistakes
- Using the linear foot-to-meter factor (0.3048) on area values.
- Confusing perimeter (feet) with area (ft²).
- Rounding too early when multiplying large areas—keep extra digits until the final step.
